How it Works

Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect is a mutual order routing connectivity established by Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEx) and Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) to allow investors in their respective markets to trade eligible securities listed in the other market.

Through this connection, you will now be able to trade Shanghai 'A' shares.

Risks of Investing through the Shanghai-HK Stock Connect

Investors should consider the following risks which are applicable to trading through the Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect:

Foreign Exchange Risk

When the security is priced in a currency that is different from the investor's functional currency, you may be exposed to foreign exchange fluctuations, which will either enhance or erode the investment returns on the security.

Margin Calls

If the market moves against the position that you are holding, it may result in margin calls or requests to place additional funds on deposits with the company to cover the shortfall in the margin requirement level to maintain the position.

If you are unable to put in the additional funds, your broker may close out the position without prior notice to you. In addition, you will still be liable for any further losses that may result from this.

Over-exposure and Over-trading

Investors often look only at the margin required and fail to appreciate and take into account the full contract value. When trading in a large number of contracts, the total potential exposure of such contracts may be significantly beyond the investor's financial resources.

Volatility

Currency prices fluctuate due to various reasons including geopolitical factors and market sentiment, and may move unexpectedly due to major events or disasters. These fluctuations may cause losses.

Fluctuations

Constant fluctuations in currency rates may affect investors who trade in short-term investments.

Investment Sectors and Country Risk

Focusing trade in one country and one sector may result in a higher risk of loss due to adverse economic, market and political crisis within that country. To mitigate this risk, it would be wiser to build a portfolio that is diversified across several countries and sectors.
