Singapore faces wide-ranging ESG challenges. Climate change threatens its physical security as a low-lying, resource scarce island, while there are social & governance risks from its role as a regional financial centre. The country is seeking to address these issues through a comprehensive 'Green Plan' that is set to enhance its physical defences as well as reposition itself as a regional sustainability hub. This opens opportunities: (a) from corporates seeking to reform their strategies to become greener, and (b) from global capital flows looking to minimise risk in the post-Pandemic recovery, whilst increasing weightings in sustainable assets.
The 'Green Plan' is complemented by regulatory initiatives by MAS and SGX to promote and widen the green capital markets ecosystem, while enhancing governance and risk mitigation. We think these could play an important role in buttressing Singapore's competitive advantage regionally. Download Report
