The start of the “balik kampung” rush to celebrate the Lunar New Year this year saw Maybank join in – but only for a Road Safety Awareness Campaign at the Jalan Duta Toll Plaza today.

Motorists at Jalan Duta Toll were pleasantly surprised to receive goodie bags from Head, Automobile Consumer Finance, Hamirullah Boorhan

With a reminder to drive safely and belt up, Maybank Automobile Financing employees gave away 2,000 goodie bags containing mandarin oranges, mineral water and leaflets on road safety to motorists travelling on the PLUS highway.

Maybank’s Head of Consumer Finance, Hamirullah Boorhan, said the campaign was part of Maybank’s mission to humanise financial services, this time by promoting safe driving habits especially during the busy festive period.

He said that according to the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research, the numbers of registered vehicles currently stands at 20 million. There were more than 400,000 accidents with 26,000 road casualties and 6,872 deaths in 2010 and this has been on an upward trend.

“In the spirit of 1Malaysia, we want to remind the public that the festive season is for fun and family gatherings. This campaign serves to remind them that safety is paramount and the responsibility of all drivers,” he said.

He added that Maybank is among the largest provider of automobile financing in Malaysia, financing one of every five vehicles on Malaysian roads. “We feel it is also our responsibility to ensure that road users adhere to safety precautions while driving, especially when travelling long distance during the extended Chinese New Year holiday,” said Hamirullah.

Hamirullah said that as an added benefit to customers, Maybank will also offer free Personal Accident insurance coverage worth RM50,000 to the first 200 customers who finance their new car with Maybank Automobile Financing from today.

The road safety campaign was carried out with the cooperation of PLUS.
