Maybank Islamic Provides Relief To Groups Who Are Affected By COVID-19 In 11 Countries In Conjunction With The Fasting Month

KUALA LUMPUR, 20 APRIL 2021: Maybank Islamic contributed food packs in conjunction with the upcoming fasting month of Ramadan to alleviate the burdens of over 5,000 families who are affected by Covid-19 in 11 countries where the bank operates.

Maybank lslamic Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Mohamed Rafique Merican said the aid will be distributed to individuals or families particularly the B40 income group which included single mothers, people with disabilities, fishermen, farmers and those who have lost their jobs since the start of Movement Control Order (MCO).

“We hope that this contribution will ease the burdens and reduce the cost of daily expenses of those in need, especially with the upcoming fasting month”.

“Our focus this year will be on groups who are impacted by the pandemic and for the first time ever, we are expanding the food aid in United Arab Emirates to benefit the foreign workers especially in the support services there; where we have officially opened a branch at the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) in February 2020”, he said in a statement today.

From its inception in 2013 to date, Maybank Islamic has allocated a fund of over RM14 million for its flagship CR programme which has benefited about 120,000 underprivileged families.

The yearly programme called called Regional Ramadhan Relief is a collaboration with five other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) namely the Islamic Relief Malaysia (IRM), Mercy Malaysia, Islamic Aid Malaysia (IAM), Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia (YaPEIM) and Yayasan Ikhlas.

“We are grateful this is the ninth year that programme has been implemented successfully and benefitted the underprivileged groups in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Brunei, Dubai and the marginalised community in Myanmar of the Rohingya ethnic.”

Dato’ Mohamed Rafique juga also said the programme is aligned to the Maybank Group’s mission of humanising financial services across Asia and it is also part of Maybank Islamic’s initiative to uphold the intended outcomes of Shariah.

This year, Maybank Islamic has allocated a fund of more than RM13 million for its Corporate Responsibility programme which will distributed on the basis of four pillars which include education, humanitarian aid, Islamic Social Finance & Ihsan.
