Maybank Islamic contributes RM2.9 Million in conjunction with Ramadhan

KUALA LUMPUR, 22 APRIL 2020: In conjunction with the fasting month of Ramadhan, Maybank Islamic Berhad has allocated funds worth RM2.9 million to over 15,000 underprivileged families in 10 ASEAN countries.

From the amount, RM1.7 million is allocated for more than 9,000 families in Malaysia where they will receive essential food items such as rice, cooking oil, flour, eggs, sugar, among other things.

Since 2013, Maybank Islamic’s flagship community programme has allocated a total of close to RM13 million to benefit over 90,000 families particularly the B40 income group which included single mothers, people with disabilities, orphans, fishermen, farmers and disadvantaged groups.

The programme, called Regional Ramadhan Relief is a collaboration with 3 other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) namely the Islamic Relief Malaysia, Mercy Malaysia and the Islamic Aid Malaysia.

Maybank Islamic Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Mohamed Rafique Merican said since the implementation of the Movement Control Order on 18 March, which is essential to address the spread of the Covid-19 virus, there are segments of the community that will experience a decrease in their incomes.

“Therefore, we are hopeful that the food aid worth RM2.9 million we are giving, will to a certain extent ease the burden of the community in need especially when they are facing difficult times such as now,” he said in a media statement.

He added that Maybank Islamic is grateful that the programme has successfully gone into its 8th year and has benefited not just Malaysian families but also in communities in Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Brunei and the displaced Rohingyas from Myanmmar.

Dato’ Mohamed Rafique also said the programme is aligned to the Maybank Group’s mission of humanising financial services across Asia and it is also part of Maybank Islamic’s initiative to uphold the intended outcomes of Shariah.

This year, Maybank Islamic has allocated a fund of more than RM15 million through its corporate social responsibility programme which will be distributed throughout 2020 which included programmes such as education financial assistance, community empowerment, humanitarian aid, clean water & socioeconomic programmes for rural communities and sponsorship of young heart patients at the National Heart Institute.
