Efforts to develop ASEAN Golfing Talents continue to achieve success in run up to Maybank Championship 2018
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,: Maybank today announced its extended multi-year sponsorship of the first Malaysian to win the Asian Tour Order of Merit, Gavin Green. Part of its on-going commitment to developing excellence in golf across ASEAN, the appointment of Green - who was first appointed as Maybank’s ASEAN Ambassador in 2015 for a three-year commitment – will see the homegrown professional continuing to receive support from Maybank in further honing his skills and competing at an international level for another three years.
Green, who turned professional in 2015, continues to make waves across the region as his performance last year gained steam. He recently took the top spot on the Asian Tour Order of Merit following his maiden victory at the Mercuries Taiwan Masters in October 2017 and finished runner-up thrice. The 23-year-old is now the second youngest golfer to win the accolade of Order of Merit champion on the Asian Tour.
Maybank Group President and CEO, Datuk Abdul Farid Alias said, “More than a decade ago, we decided to focus our efforts towards identifying, training and nurturing the best golfing talents we could find in ASEAN. Today, we are starting to see those efforts bear fruit with new and upcoming golfers from Malaysia and the region making waves at an international level.”
“Gavin Green is an example of what we see as an effective talent development initiative where Maybank empowers dedicated, focused and ambitious young talents and help them reach new heights,” he continued.
Green is Maybank’s ASEAN Ambassador and proof of success of the Bank’s focus on developing talent from the ground up.
Maybank is the first financial institution in Malaysia to champion a structured long term development of golf in Malaysia and across the ASEAN region, beginning its support of the game in 2006.
This included direct sponsorship of selected players; creating playing platforms for Malaysian and ASEAN talent to experience international tournaments; monetary support through the prize purses sponsored; and the creating, maintenance and promotion of the Maybank Championship that allows aspiring players the perfect platform to springboard to international success right here in Malaysia. Apart from Green, Maybank had previously sponsored local professional golfers Danny Chia and Shaaban Hussin.
In 2014, Green became the first amateur to win on the Asian Development Tour (ADT), and went on to represent Malaysia at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
“It is truly an exceptional honour to continue my longstanding partnership with Maybank as its ASEAN Ambassador in the game of golf. Maybank and Maybank Championship has definitely opened up many doors for me throughout my career as it is a great platform for me to meet other world-class players and represent our beautiful country, Malaysia,” said Green.
The long-hitting Green will also be representing Malaysia in the third instalment of the Maybank Championship which will take place at Saujana Golf and Country Club on the 1st to the 4th of February 2018.
Maybank’s focus on ensuring the right infrastructure is in place is also key as demonstrated by the consistent rise of new champions who are often spotted at Maybank sponsored tournaments over the years.
