Maybank’s Photography Contest on “Being Human"

Maybank recently hosted the ‘Maybank Photography Awards’. This creative contest marks the first time that a Malaysian bank has ever organised a photography competition of this magnitude in Malaysia.

The contest submission which started from 3 September to 31 October 2012 via the www.maybankphotoawards.com website successfully garnered more than 19,000 submissions nationwide. The works of the selected finalists of the contest were showcased at the Maybank Photography Awards Grand Finale held in 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Petaling Jaya on 24 November 2012.

The contest is a collaborative effort between Maybank, Leica, Profoto and HP (Hewlett Packard).

Maybank Group Chief Marketing Officer, Mr. Mohamed Adam Wee Abdullah said “The theme of the contest, ‘Being Human’ was aimed at showcasing the very values that make us what we are and who we are through the power of images. We believe images have the ability to spur social development and cultural understanding, thus uniting us as people. The selected photographs were those which resonate with our mission, that is to humanise financial services across Asia,”

“The contest has gained the interest, and engaged with a wide spectrum, of our customers ranging from the mass market segment to the high networth segment. The quality of submissions has been extremely high with some truly astounding photographs on display. Picking a winner was a challenging task” he added.

The photo submissions were carefully selected and were judged by local and international professional photographers such as Thorsten von Overgaard, Ming Thein, Wesley Wong and Azrul K Abdullah.

The Maybank Photography Awards is an initiative to establish a gold standard for photographic excellence in Malaysia. It also aims to encourage the appreciation of photographic arts among the Malaysian public.

In keeping with Maybank’s mission, children were not left out of this exciting contest.

“As part of the activities leading up to this finale, we recently conducted a photography workshop for orphans of Asrama Kebajikan Ar Rayyan Johor Baru. Photographs taken by these children are on display at a charity sale and the prints can be viewed and bought from our printing partner HP at their booth at the exhibition. All proceeds from the sale of their prints will be donated to their respected homes,” Adam said.

The categories of the contest are Photography of the Year, Street Photography, Studio Photography, Landscape Photography, Press Photography and People’s Choice Awards. One winner was selected for each category and two winners for the People’s Choice Award category.

A wide range of events were also scheduled during the Maybank Photography Grand Finale. These include fashion photography workshops and family day photography contests. The winners of the Maybank Photography Awards were later announced at the Grand finale event.
