Maybank Announces 3 Senior Management Appointments

Maybank is pleased to announce three senior management appointments in the Group effective 1 July 2016. Dato’ Muzaffar Hisham (current Group Head of Islamic Banking and CEO of Maybank Islamic) has been appointed Group Head of Global Banking; Dato' Mohamad Rafique Merican (current Group Chief Financial Officer) will take over as Group Head, Islamic Banking and CEO of Maybank Islamic while Dato’ Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir (currently the Group Head, Global Banking) will assume the role of Group Chief Financial Officer.

Group President & CEO Datuk Abdul Farid Alias said that the appointments, which essentially involve a rotation of portfolios, are meant to address three objectives. “The first objective is to strengthen and improve the new roles they will be assuming by bringing new ideas and further heightening the level of energy. The second objective relates to the continuous development in leadership skills of the appointees which also applies to all Maybankers under their own personal development plans. And the third is to strengthen Maybank Group’s Leadership benchstrength.”

“The three appointees have been strong and valuable contributors to the transformation of the Maybank Group. This move will give them the opportunity to inject fresh perspectives into their new roles,” he said. “This rotation will also enable them to broaden their skills, gain valuable experience and take up new challenges in their careers.”

Dato’ Muzaffar has collectively 21 years of experience in the banking and financial services. His track record includes careers with Asian International Merchant Bankers Berhad in the Corporate Banking Division, with Amanah Merchant Bank Berhad and Amanah Short Deposits Berhad where he handled corporate debt and financing businesses from debt syndication to advising on private debt securities. He was also involved in various debt and corporate restructuring exercises during the 1997 financial crisis. During his tenure at CIMB Investment Bank and HSBC Amanah, Dato’ Muzaffar was involved in the investment banking business. Prior to joining Maybank in 2011, Dato’ Muzaffar was the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of CIMB Islamic Bank Berhad as well as member of the Board of Directors of CIMB Insurance Brokers Sdn. Bhd. He received the Asset Triple A Awards 2013, Industry Leadership Award as Islamic Banker of the Year for his contribution to developing Islamic finance regionally and growing Maybank Group’s Islamic banking business.

Dato’ Muzaffar has a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Economics and Accounting, University of Bristol, United Kingdom. He holds various positions amongst them Chairman of the Standards Committee of Association of Islamic Banking Institutions Malaysia (AIBIM); Member of the AIBIM Executive Committee; Member of H.M. Treasury U.K. Global Islamic Finance and Investment Group; Director of ANFAAL Capital, Saudi Arabia; Director of RAEED Holdings Sdn. Bhd.; Member of INCEIF Professional Development Panel and INCEIF Academic Quality Assurance Committee, and Chartered Banker of Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers.

Dato’ Rafique who joined Maybank in 2012, is also the President Commissionaire of PT Bank Maybank Syariah Indonesia. He has more than 20 years of experience in the corporate sector including as CFO of Tenaga Nasional Bhd and Malakoff Berhad. He served at Radicare (M) Sdn Bhd, a facilities management concessionaire for hospitals in several states as its COO and then CEO. He also worked with Amanah Capital Group and Bumiputera Merchant Bankers Berhad in corporate finance and advisory roles. He is a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) UK; Chartered Accountant, Malaysian Institute of Accountants and underwent the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School. He is a member of the Malaysia Accounting Standards Board; Malaysia Advisory Committee of ACCA Malaysia and CNBC Global CFO Council.

Dato' Feisal brings a wealth of global financial and banking experience, including a role as a public company Chief Executive Officer. He graduated from the London School of Economics & Political Science with a BSc Economics (Accounting & Finance). He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants England & Wales and a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants. He is also a Chartered Banker from Chartered Banker Institute and Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers.

He started his career in KPMG Plc, London and later served with Citigroup Global Markets in the Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hong Kong offices until 2004. At Citigroup, he progressed his career in various departments within the Investment Banking division including Project Finance and Privatisations, Corporate Finance, Mergers & Acquisitions as well as coverage of large cap Industrial Groups. In 2004, he joined BinaFikir Sdn. Bhd. as a shareholder and Executive Director. In 2008, he was appointed as Managing Director, Head of Investment Banking for Maybank Investment Bank responsible for the Investment Banking, Corporate Finance, Equity Capital Markets and Private Equity Divisions. In 2010, he joined Permodalan Nasional Berhad as Executive Vice President of Special Projects and was later seconded to Chemical Company of Malaysia Berhad as Executive Director and subsequently, appointed as Group Managing Director and CEO. He rejoined Maybank in 2014 as Group Head, Global Banking.
