- Employees from Group Human Capital undertake initiatives for People with Learning Disabilities

Some 280 employees from Maybank’s Group Human Capital (GHC) today commemorated the Maybank Group Global CR Day by organising a 3-day charity bazaar at Mid Valley Megamall South Court to create awareness to the public on People with Learning Disabilities (PLD). The charity bazaar saw the promotion of products and crafts produced by PLD. The profit generated from the sales will be utilised for the sustainability of their programmes.

The charity bazaar was participated by GOLD Centre (Generating Opportunities for Learning Disables) as well as eight other invited NGOs namely Pertubuhan Keluarga Orang-Orang Masalah Pembelajaran (PERKOBP), United Voice, Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Istimewa Kajang (PKIK), Persatuan Sindrom Down Malaysia (PSDM), Kiwanis Job Training Centre, Biji Biji Initiatives, Ecocentric Transitions and B.Y.O.B – Bring your own Bottle Green Concept. There were also live performances by the PLD community, canvas drawing by PSDM and a demonstration of wire craft and jewellery making by Kiwanis Job Training Centre.

The event also saw Nora Manaf, Group Chief Human Capital Officer launch the “Maybank2u Pay” facility for GOLD Centre. The innovative payment gateway will enable users of Maybank2u to pay for the purchase of items from GOLD’s online catalogue. This facility will also benefit the Centre as well as other NGOs which have products for sale online as part of their efforts to be self-sufficient, as it enables them to manage sales transactions via their websites systematically and effectively.

Commenting about the event, Nora Manaf said, “Celebrating our Global CR Day in one of the most popular shopping malls and one of the largest in the region connects us with the larger community too. This engagement is closely aligned to Maybank’s humanising mission to be at the heart of the community.”

On Group Human Capital’s initiative with GOLD, Nora added, “We opted to volunteer and partner with Generating Opportunities for Learning Disables (GOLD) which is an association that plans, facilitates and implements programmes in generating opportunities for people with Learning Disabilities (LD) as we want to help the enthusiastic children and adults with learning disabilities to have a brighter future and be instrumental in realising their potential talents. We believe we have the expertise and resources among us to bring about positive change and growth to GOLD and the residents.”

The Maybank Group Global CR Day, now in its fifth year, is part of the Group’s “Cahaya Kasih” employee volunteerism programme where employees are encouraged to engage directly with the community in their respective locations, and help impact their lives and/or environment through sustainable initiatives.

Maybank GHC employees were part of over 20,000 Maybankers from Malaysia as well as from the Group’s offices abroad - including New York, London, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, Labuan, India, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei, China, Bahrain, Papua New Guinea and Singapore who came together today to reaffirm their commitment to social development and welfare as well as environmental conservation through various community programmes. This year, over 90 initiatives were implemented by employees across the Group.

Some of the initiatives undertaken this year included Maybank Islamic’s “Cycle Save A Child’s Heart” cycling event at Putrajaya. Involving more than 1,000 participants, this charity cycling event raised RM50,000 to support paediatric heart patients from across the ASEAN region who are seeking treatment at Institut Jantung Negara, Kuala Lumpur. Maybank Islamic also presented a separate contribution of RM1 million to Institut Jantung Negara at the event.

Elsewhere, in New York, Maybank’s Group President and CEO Datuk Abdul Farid Alias led employees there in their Habitat for Humanity initiative, while in the Philippines, Maybankers engaged with hearing impaired children at 'My Children's House of Hope' in learning activities and self-expression through arts. In Indonesia, employees reinforced Maybank’s philosophy of embracing diversity and inclusiveness by a cleaning campaign at places of worship. Maybankers in Singapore, on the other hand, embarked on a fundraising initiative themed “M-Powering MINDS” with their beneficiary, Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS) at Yio Chu Kang Stadium.

The Global CR Day was first held in 2010 in conjunction with Maybank’s 50th anniversary. Over 10,000 employees took part in that inaugural event.
