Maybank’s RM7.75m Zakat contribution as part of Ramadhan programme

- Maybank Foundation contributes RM60,000 to six welfare homes

Maybank today handed over RM 7.75 million worth of Zakat payments to 11 State zakat agencies at a Majlis Iftar Kumpulan Maybank held at Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan in Kuala Lumpur.

The contribution was a portion of the total of RM19.2 million in zakat by Maybank Group’s Islamic banking unit, Maybank Islamic Berhad, for the financial year 2014. The handover today was presented to the representatives from the 11 states namely Selangor, Wilayah Persekutuan, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Pahang, Terengganu, Sabah, Sarawak, Kedah and Perlis.

The event was graced by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Senator Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid Omar as well as the Chairman of Maybank, Tan Sri Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor, Group President & CEO Maybank, Datuk Abdul Farid Alias and Group Head Islamic Banking, CEO Maybank Islamic Berhad, Muzaffar Hisham.

The event was also attended by Maybank’s corporate clients as well as 100 orphans and disabled from six welfare homes in the Klang Valley. They are Rumah Kebajikan “Generating Opportunities For Learning Disables”; Rumah Kasih Harmoni, Kampung Paya Jaras; Persatuan Orang Buta Malaysia; Rumah Anak-Anak Shifa; Rumah Asrama Damai Kuang and Anak Warisan Kasih.

Tan Sri Megat in his speech expressed gratitude for being able to celebrate Ramadhan with the special guests and orphans, despite some of the recent events that had occurred in the country such as the floods and earthquake in Sabah.

He said, “The month of Ramadhan is not just about being more fervent in our prayers but it is also a month of giving and sharing with those in need. As a leading financial institution in the region, we are thankful and blessed that we have benefitted from the region’s economic growth. We therefore want to share our blessings by making our zakat contributions of over RM 7.75 million to 11 states in Malaysia where the proceeds will be used to help those in need.”

“In this blessed month, I am also pleased to announce that we will be allocating a total of RM10,000 to each of six deserving beneficiaries located in Klang Valley.” added Tan Sri Megat.

“Maybank has always been at the forefront in engaging with communities around us. We believe in the importance of enhancing the quality of life of communities where we operate. This is very much in line with our mission to Humanise Financial Services,” noted Tan Sri Megat.

At the event, Tan Sri Megat together with Datuk Abdul Farid Alias also distributed Hari Raya packets and gift packs to the orphans to help brighten up their Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
