LUNAR NEW YEAR BROUGHT TO JOYFUL CLOSE IN MAYBANK’S DOUBLE ‘HORSEPERITY’ CELEBRATIONS

The lunar year celebration was brought to a joyful close by Maybank last week through Double ‘Horseperity’ celebrations held in the Klang Valley.

At Menara Maybank, Maybank Chairman, Tan Sri Dato’ Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor and Group President & CEO, Datuk Abdul Farid Alias hosted a Chinese New Year celebration for 50 elderly and 20 disabled guests from Tong Sim Senior Citizens Center, Little Sisters of the Poor and Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Klang. Also present were Board members, senior management and employees.

The special guests received mandarin oranges and ang pows which was followed by the tossing of yee sang and a private lunch with the board and management team. Guests were also awed by performances of the world champion Khuan Loke Dragon and Lion Dance Association troupe on raised stilts and a special performance by Chung Hong Tsin, a professional wheelchair-bound dancer.

Separately, Maybank also organised a Chinese New Year celebration at the Beautiful Gate Foundation’s (BGF) home in Petaling Jaya where it presented 15 light weight wheelchairs and 15 ‘dancing’ wheelchairs worth RM100,000 to the foundation.

The Maybank delegation led by Jerome Hon, Maybank Group Chief Operations Officer, witnessed an exciting performance by the BGF Performing Arts Troupe on wheelchairs which has performed across Malaysia and in the region. He also presented gift packs and ang pows to the residents in addition to tossing yee sang with them.

BGF is an association which provides accommodation, training and various services to the disabled. The foundation which operates eight centres nationwide, offers career development, rehabilitation, education, counselling and various training skills. Currently, there are about 120 disabled residing at the eight centres and 1,000 non-resident disabled members.

Speaking about the initiatives, Tan Sri Dato’ Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor said, “Reaching out to the needy communities through different initiatives during festive celebrations is part of Maybank’s mission in humanising financial services and being at the heart of community.”

“This year, we have taken our programmes to another level by initiating a region-wide contribution drive for disabled communities by calling on our employees to donate essential items such as rice, flour, sugar, canned food, toiletries and stationary items which will benefit selected disabled homes in Malaysia, and around the region where Maybank has presence.”

He also said that contributing to and engaging more with the disabled people in spirit of celebrating Chinese New Year is aligned with Maybank Foundation’s key focus in 2014.
