Maybank Foundation Brought Cheer to Hospital Selayang’s Liver Transplant Center Patients and Staff

About 120 patients, their families and staff of Hospital Selayang Liver Transplant Center were treated to a buka puasa hosted by Maybank Foundation (MF) at the hospital today. The Foundation’s secretariat was accompanied by Dr Hajah Siti Zaleha Mohd Salleh, Director of Hospital Selayang and Management from Hepatobiliary Unit also visited patients at the hospital’s ward to distribute goodie bags and “duit raya” to them earlier in the evening. The experience made for a memorable night and the patients were seen enjoying themselves chatting away with some of the attendees.

Maybank has been actively involved in supporting public healthcare development over the years. This echoes the Bank’s mission to humanise financial services by helping the community gain access to medical services and lead a healthier life. Maybank Foundation is committed to providing a better access to the public and this is in line with the Government’s initiatives to develop healthcare of the country.

Hospital Selayang’s Liver Transplant Center has been providing affordable liver transplants for patients who are unable to bear the significantly higher amount charged by private hospitals locally or abroad.

Established in 2002, Hospital Selayang’s Liver Transplant Center is a unique public-private initiative. Maybank entered into a unique partnership with the Hospital to support the establishment and running of its liver transplant centre with an initial contribution of RM 5 million. Subseqently, Maybank handed over a contribution of RM162,000 from the Maybank Foundation which were collected from the fundraising events the Maybank Malaysia Badminton and Golf Open tournaments.

The contribution will be utilised to defray the cost involved in running the centre and ensuring its sustainability and ability to benefit the public.

It is estimated that annually about six to ten patients undergo liver transplants at the Center. With the support from Maybank Foundation, the number is expected to increase to 15 patients anually.
