RM207,000 raised to benefit Liver Transplant Centre of Hospital Selayang

Maybank and the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) today hosted a welcome reception for the Maybank Malaysia Open Team 2013. The event included a charity auction organised by Maybank to benefit the Liver Transplant Center of Hospital Selayang, which raised RM207,000.

The fundraising event was graced by Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor, Patron of BAM and wife of the Malaysian Prime Minister, Tan Sri Dato’ Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor, Chairman of Maybank and Dato’ Sri Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh, BAM President. Other guests included senior officials of Maybank, BAM Council members and representatives from Liver Transplant Center of Hospital Selayang. The bidders included corporate leaders and badminton enthusiasts.The move is part of Maybank’s initiative to help reaffirm its support to the Liver Transplant Center as well as build-up excitement prior to one of the much-awaited badminton tournaments in Malaysia.

Speaking at the event, Tan Sri Dato’ Megat Zaharuddin said Maybank has been supporting the Centre since 2002, even having played a part in its establishment. "This Liver Transplant Center not only provides treatment that is comparable to private and overseas hospitals, it does so at a very affordable cost to those most in need especially children,”he said.“Maybank’s continuous support to the Centre is in line with our mission of humanising financial services. Both parties have always wanted the best for our communities and both share a common vision of quality services that is accessible to the masses.”

Tan Sri Dato’ Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor also wished the national badminton players all the best for the upcoming Maybank Malaysia Open tournament and thanked them for their involvement in this worthy project. “Thank you for your generous contributions to our cause. I truly believe that just by doing so, you have made a difference. Your display of sportsmanship on the court and humility and compassion off it should be commended,” he added

At the charity auction, sports memorabilia such as t-shirts, racquets, jackets and shoe bags autographed by leading badminton players were put up for sale. The items included personal belongings which have sentimental values to players in the likes of Dato’ Lee Chong Wei, Koo Kien Kiat, Tan Boon Heong, Tee Jing Yi, Lee Yong Dae (Korea) and many others.

Maybank has been actively involved in supporting public healthcare development over the years and has been helping the community gain access to medical services and lead a healthier life. It has been supporting the Liver Transplant Centre since its establishment in 2002 with an initial grant of RM5 million.

Through its sponsorship of two flagship sports events namely badminton and golf, the Bank has been organising a number of fund raising activities to enable the public help those in need. Last year, a total of RM12,000 was raised from the public for the Liver Transplant Center, which was topped up by an additional RM150,000 from the Maybank Foundation.

The Maybank Malaysia Open 2013, to be held from 15 – 20 January 2013, will continue this tradition. This year, it will give the public a chance to test their “smash” skills at Stadium Putra Bukit Jalil. Participants will be challenged to a virtual badminton game where they have to smash as hard as they can to stand a chance to win an iPad mini. There will be a RM2 participation fee and all proceeds collected will be channeled to the Liver Transplant Centre.
