Maybank today joined forces with the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) through various community programmes. The Bank and its IT outsourcing partner CSC in Malaysia have teamed up to do their part by contributing 200 refreshed computers to single mothers nationwide under the Rumah Nur programme managed by the Department of Women's Development, Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development.

In addition, Maybank employees throughout the country will provide free computer lessons to enable the women to use the computers effectively and to improve their economic self-sufficiency.

Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Malaysia Senator Dato' Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil received the computers from Maybank Chairman, Tan Sri Dato' Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor and Dennis Koh, Managing Director of CSC Malaysia at a special presentation ceremony held at Menara Maybank today.

Also present at the ceremony were Kamal Malhotra, UN Resident Coordinator & Resident Representative, Ambassadors and representatives, senior officials of the Ministry and government agencies, NGOs, single mothers from the Rumah Nur programme as well as employees from Maybank.

“This year our commemoration in appreciation of women, and their contributions, takes on a greater meaning through our collaboration with the Ministry of Women, Family & Community Development. We are humbled at being selected as a partner in this year’s national celebration. This recognition also gives honour to Maybank women employees and is an affirmation of Maybank’s emphasis in providing equal opportunities and empowerment to our women employees,” said Tan Sri Megat Zaharuddin in his speech.

“We hope that our contributions will help educate the women on the use of computers to enhance their livelihood and broaden their boundaries of communication and networking.  In line with Maybank’s employee volunteerism, our staff will also be providing training in computer usage as well as internet banking at every Rumah Nur centre nationwide,” added Tan Sri Megat Zaharuddin.

“Congratulations to Maybank and the Ministry for initiating and undertaking this programme that will benefit women’s development nationwide. CSC is honoured to be Maybank’s partner and be able to leverage our IT expertise to jointly provide the computers to create new avenues for education and vocational advancement for the single mothers,” said Dennis Koh, Managing Director, CSC Malaysia.

In conjunction with the celebration, Maybank also organised a three-day programme at Menara Maybank as well as activities at its Region offices nationwide centered around the Women’s Day theme. Apart from the computer donation, a Sales Carnival with 20 stalls offering products by single mothers is also being held at Menara Maybank from 8-10 March to create greater awareness of their projects and to generate income for themselves. In addition, the Bank is holding a number of workshops over three days that cover topics on financial independence, women’s sexuality and self defence for women.

“Our Regional offices nationwide are also organising activities such as health clinics for women and gifts to female customers while our international office in Maybank Phnom Penh is working with the Ladies Association of the Malaysian Embassy and the ASEAN Women Circle by making monetary contributions to its charitable programmes. At Indonesia, Bank Internasional Indonesia is organising a ‘BII Women’s Day’ celebration with special gifts to female customers,” added Tan Sri Megat Zaharuddin.

Tan Sri Megat Zaharuddin also said that Maybank, as a responsible corporate citizen supports initiatives towards greater emancipation of women both in the workplace and the nation. “Close to 60% of our workforce are female employees and they serve in every position in the bank, from senior management to middle level managers and even security personnel. The Group has over the years pursued strategies that respond to the needs of women, whether in career development, employee benefits or welfare, or as customers. As an example for the latter, we were the first in the market to offer a special insurance coverage for women that include protection from crime-related accidents and losses from snatch theft as well as kidnapping,” he said.

Members of the public who wish to support the single mothers at the Sales Carnival can do so at the opening times from 11 am to 3.00 pm at Menara Maybank from 8-10 March.
