Tengku Zafrul appointed as COO of Maybank Investment Bank

Maybank is pleased to announce the appointment of Tengku Zafrul Tengku Aziz as Chief Operating Officer of Maybank Investment Bank Berhad (Maybank IB) effective 16 June 2010. Subsequently, it is intended that Tengku Zafrul will assume the position of Chief Executive Officer of Maybank IB subject to the approval of Bank Negara Malaysia, the Securities Commission and other relevant authorities.

Tengku Zafrul, 37, holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Economics and Accounting from Bristol University, UK and a Master of Finance & Economics from Exeter University, UK. He brings to the Maybank Group his wide investment banking and corporate experience having served at senior leadership positions in key institutions over the last 14 years.

On the appointment, Maybank President and CEO Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid Omar said today, “Maybank IB is at a position of accelerated growth given the strong foundation that has been put in place in recent years as part of our Group-wide transformation journey to secure greater domestic and regional leadership. Tengku Zafrul is currently the Group Director of K & N Kenanga Holdings Berhad, and a board member of Kenanga Investment Bank Berhad, Kenanga Capital Sdn Bhd and Capital Investment Bank (Labuan) Limited. He was appointed as Director at Credit Agricole in the early years of his career. He had also previously served as CEO of Tune Money Sdn Bhd, Head of Investment Banking in Citigroup Malaysia Group Managing Director of ECM Avenue Berhad and CEO of Avenue Securities.

Tengku Zafrul is well regarded as one of Malaysia’s enterprising young leaders and is Chairman of Leaders for Tomorrow (L4T), Deputy President of the Kuala Lumpur Business Club (KLBC) and a Board Member of the Federation of Investment Managers Malaysia (FiMM). He is also the Vice President of Squash Racket Association Malaysia (SRAM). Tengku Zafrul has received several accolades including the APEA 2008 Most Promising Entrepreneurship Award by Enterprise Asia and Technology Business Review Asean CEO Award 2008. In November 2009, he received the Malaysia Business Leadership Awards (MBLA) 2009 in the Investment Banking sector.
