Maybank "Senang Menang Campaign" Records 4-fold Increase in Debit Card Payments at Mydin

Maybank has recorded a four-fold increase in debit card payments at Mydin outlets during its recent three-month “Senang Menang” campaign. Payments via Maybankard Debit Card (ATM card) totalled RM5.7 million for the period 1 December 2007 - 29 February 2008 compared to RM1.2 million in the previous corresponding period of 1 December 2006 - 28 February 2007.

This was announced today by Ashraf Ali Abdul Kadir, Maybank Executive Vice President and Head, Cards & Payments at the presentation ceremony for the winners of the Maybank-Mydin Senang Menang contest. The contest which attracted over 50,000 eligible participants, was aimed at creating awareness on the multiple "benefits & rewarding experience" of using debit cards in Malaysia.

According to Ashraf, the success of the three-month campaign was also reinforced by the 75% growth in transaction value when compared to the preceeding three months of September - November 2007.

“The significant increase in transaction volume and value during the three-month campaign compared to last year is most encouraging as it indicates growing acceptance of debit card use by customers for their retail purchases. We believe that moving forward, this payment convenience will continue to grow as even more customers and merchants become aware of the benefits it offers,” said Ashraf.

He added that apart from the convenience offered, customers can enjoy Maybankard’s special loyalty programme where they will earn 1 TreatsPoint for every RM5 paid using the debit card. These accumulated points can be used to redeem exciting gift items, shopping, dinning and your dream vacation.

Ashraf also announced that Maybank customers can now redeem their TreatPoints for Mydin vouchers. “Today, as part of our continued promotion with Mydin stores, we are introducing the redemption of Maybank TreatsPoints in the form of Mydin vouchers. Now, with 8,500 TreatPoints customers are entitled to redeem a voucher worth RM50 which can be use to purchase any items from Mydin. With this added buying power, the Maybankard debit card will be more beneficial to its customers,” said Ashraf.

On the Senang Menang campaign, Ashraf said that such joint campaigns offer great opportunities to promote cashless transactions in the retail sector. “We are pleased that retailers are fast realizing the benefits that can be obtained from introducing cashless payments, not only in terms of time saved, but more importantly in terms of enhanced security arising from reduced cash handling and easier account reconciliation,” he added.

Mydin, one of Malaysia’s leading hypermarket operators has a total of 41 Mydin outlets including emporiums, supermarkets and hypermarkets. Maybank has more than 5.8 million Maybankard Debit cards in circulation, of which more than 500,000 are used actively for debit payments at utility payment counters, food and beverage outlets, entertainment centres and retail outlets.

Participation in the Debit Senang Menang campaign was simple as customers were only required to spend a minimum RM50 at any Mydin outlet using their Maybankard Debit Card. Mr Ayyappan s/o Raman Kutty Nair was the winner of the Grand Prize of a Proton Persona while 60 other winners received RM100 worth of Mydin gift vouchers.
