Maybank

Maybank has allocated RM1.8 million for its scholarship awards to 205 students pursuing undergraduate studies at local universities this year. Of this 54 are new recipients who received their awards at a special ceremony in Kuala Lumpur today. Each student received RM7,000 annually as well as a laptop. The other 151 are existing scholars who are pursing their second to final year studies in various local universities.

The awards to the new recipients were presented by Maybank Chairman, Tan Sir Mohamed Basir bin Ahmad. Also present at the event were Maybank Head of Group Human Capital, Nora Abd Manaf as well as family members of the scholarship recipients.

At the ceremony, six Maybank scholars who had completed their studies and graduated with first class honours also received special awards from the Chairman.

Speaking at the event, Maybank Chairman said, "We are happy to extend our scholarship awards this year to include private universities to provide greater opportunities to high achievers in these institutions. At the same time, despite a CGPA requirement of 3.50, which is higher than most scholarship requirements of 3.0, more than 1,300 applicants were received this year. This reflects the quality of our applicants and more importantly, that Maybank is indeed a preferred choice of employment for our young men and women".

Since the inception of the awards in 1972, Maybank has sponsored more than 1,000 scholars as well as provided them with employment opportunities. "Our scholarship awards incorporate the Bank's CSR philosophy of ‘Growing with Responsibility', assisting those who excel to complete their tertiary studies and pursue a career with the nation's largest financial services group."

Tan Sri Basir congratulated the successful recipients on joining the Maybank family. He also urged the scholars to be exemplary and contribute to the community where they study. "As a Maybank ambassador, we hope you will excel in other competencies such as leadership, communication skills and teamwork, among others, as these will give you a competitive edge during your studies. Always strive to dedicate a portion of your time to meaningful community projects that will benefit society at large as well as touch the lives of the less fortunate and those in need," said Tan Sri Basir.

Maybank invests significantly amounts in education and human capital development, including training programmes to enhance its work environment and provide cash incentives to children of employees as well as Yippie Club savings account holders who excel in public school examinations. In addition, the Bank has sponsored the Chairs of Accounting in Universiti Malaya and Universiti Putra Malaysia and the Chair of Entrepreneurship in Universiti Malaysia Kelantan. The Bank also has an active school adoption programme.

The Maybank Scholarship Awards are publicised in the local media as well as Maybank2u.com in the middle of each year. Scholars undergo orientation programmes as well as undertake internship with various units in Maybank Group during their semester breaks for which they receive allowances. They are also attached to a mentor who provides support and guidance.
